Two articles ago we started a series on keyword research. Below are the links to read the previous articles of this series if you missed any of them or if you simply would like to refresh your memory.

In this article we'd like to address the keyword phrase that Tammy Smith has chosen as her primary keyword phrase.

The primary keyword phrase for any Web page should be placed within the page's most important "keyword place" which is the title element.

SEO TIP: Keep in mind that using 1 or 2 word phrases will bring people who are BROWSERS to your page and using 3 or 4 word phrases will bring people who are BUYERS to your page. (Of course this statement is not etched in stone, but more times than not the statement is true.)

A quick look at Tammy's title element shows the following ...

... Which is an EXCELLENT choice for her primary keyword phrase because there are a few good secondary keywords phrases that her page will also be optimized for.

The charts below will show the current daily search frequency for Tammy's phrases and her current rankings (if they are within the top 1000 results) for these phrases on Google and Yahoo.

Notice that Wordtracker shows 0 (zero) daily searches for the 5-word phrase ...

... So does that mean that Tammy should not optimize her page for this term?

No, not at all. It makes perfect sense to do so because you can see the benefit of all the secondary keyword phrases that will derive from this primary keyword phrase.

Our advice is to always choose a primary keyword phrase that will result in a few good secondary keyword phrases as well. This way you are basically optimizing for just a single term rather than 5 different terms, but your benefits are equal to that of optimizing for 5 different terms.

Okay, Tammy, we have a question for you. Why aren't you optimizing your page for the keyword phrase ...

... Because our research shows that it would be easy for you to acquire a top 10 ranking and a #1 ranking is quite easy as well.

For starters, we estimate that you will need around 10 links from related pages that are PageRank4 or higher and about 15 links from related pages that are PageRank3 or lower or some combination thereof, (i.e., 18 links from PageRank4+ pages or 45 links from PageRank3- pages) in order to acquire a top 10 ranking for the keyword phrase ...

Then for a #1 ranking, we estimate that doubling the aforementioned numbers would do it, and if not, your page should most definitely rank at #2 with those numbers. We would estimate that if doubling your numbers for a top 10 ranking doesn't place your page at #1, then we estimate that no more than 3 times the numbers would do it.

Which would bring the numbers to 30 links from related pages that are PageRank4 or higher and about 45 links from related pages that are PageRank3 or lower or some combination thereof.

Now, of course you want a top 10 ranking for the term ...

... So below are our estimated numbers to achieve a top 10 ranking for your page.

77 links from related pages that are PageRank4 or higher and about 230 links from related pages that are PageRank3 or lower or some combination thereof.

Since this is the first time we are sharing this type of information with you all, the numbers above are estimated toward the "safe" side, but in all probability, it may only take a total of 100 links to break into the top 10.

For the #2 ranking, we'd estimate the numbers to be as follows.

500 links from related pages that are PageRank4 or higher and about 500 links from related pages that are PageRank3 or lower or some combination thereof.

And for the #1 ranking, we'd estimate the numbers to be as follows.

1,500 links from related pages that are PageRank4 or higher and about 800 links from related pages that are PageRank3 or lower or some combination thereof.
