Should I Pay a Search Engine Submission Company?
Updated April 2004 By Alice Seba
If you've been following along
in our little series of articles:
>
What is a search engine?
>
Should I submit my web site to search engines?
you'll probably know the answer. And the
simple answer would be:
NO
But let me qualify it a bit and explain some
things. Before you purchase any service, carefully
scrutinize the offer and remember:
|
1. Just being listed in a search engine doesn't
guarantee you good rankings. It's easy to be listed in
a search engine...getting good rankings is hard work,
but it's not impossible.
2. Search engines work by following links and they will
find your website by following links. You don't need to
submit to them. Go back and read

3. There are not thousands or even hundreds of search
engines that you need to be concerned with. There are two
main search engines that will bring you traffic and they
are Google & Yahoo. You can learn more about this in the
article:
What is a search engine?
So, if a search engine submission company tells you that
you will be submitted to hundreds or thousands of search
engines...run the other way. First off, this is a waste of
your money and secondly, many of the sites you will be
submitted to are Free for All (FFA) Links websites that
exist only to collect email addresses and artificially
boost link popularity. You should NEVER be listed on those.
If you don't believe me,
listen to:
|
According to the
Google Webmaster Guidelines:
"Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of
"free-for-all" links, link popularity schemes, or
submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These
are typically useless exercises that do not affect your
ranking in the results of the major search engines. At
least, not in a way you would likely consider to be
positive."
|
4. Search engine submission
companies use auto-submitters to submit your website. This is
against the guidelines of most search engines, who ask that if
you submit your site, you do it manually. Even if the search
engine submission company says they will submit you "by
hand"...it still has no value if they are submitting you only
to search engines.
BUT NOTE: If the search engine
submission company is submitting your website to
DIRECTORIES...rather than search engines, there *may* be some
value to the service.
Note: If you don't know the
difference between a search engine & a directory, please read:
What is a search engine?
A service that submits to
quality directories like the
Open Directory
Project and specialty directories for your industry, can
save you time. Just make sure they are experienced in creating
descriptions and choosing the appropriate category for your
website.
