Should I Submit My Website to Search Engines?
April 2004 By Alice Seba
When we are speaking of true search engines that crawl the web...the simple
answer is:
No, you need not submit your website to search
engines.
If you are talking about a
human-edited directory like the
Open Directory
Project...then yes, you will need to submit there. But for
a search engine...nope, you don't have to submit.
It seems like a difficult
concept to accept because all the major search engines have
a submission page. Why? I guess because people expect it.
The general webmaster-going public might go crazy if there
was no form to submit our websites. I'm not really sure.
But the fact of the matter
is, when we are speaking of a pure search engine...like
discussed in our What
is a Search Engine article. Search engines use
technology that crawls or spiders from website to website
on the Internet. How do search engines find websites? It's
incredibly simple:
|
THROUGH
LINKS!
If you have other websites
linking to you (sites that are listed on the major search
engines), then search engines will find you.
If other websites don't
link to you, search engines will never find you...and it
really doesn't matter if you submit your site to them over
and over again.

If you don't believe me,
listen to:
|
Google Webmaster Guidelines:
"We add thousands of new
sites to our index each time we crawl the Web, but if you
like, you may submit your URL as well. Submission is not
necessary and does not guarantee inclusion in our index.
Given the large number of sites submitting URLs, it's
likely your pages will be found in an automatic crawl
before they make it into our index through the URL
submission form...
...The best way to ensure Google finds your site is for
your page to be linked from lots of pages on other sites.
Google's robots jump from page to page on the Web via
hyperlinks, so the more sites that link to you, the more
likely it is that we'll find you quickly."

Yahoo Help:
"Yahoo! Search crawls the web
every 2-4 weeks and automatically finds new content for
indexing. If pages already in the Yahoo! Search index link
to your site, it will be considered for inclusion in the
next update of the index."

When building a new website,
I absolutely don't waste my time submitting to search
engines. I just build quality incoming links to my website.
It's as simple as that.
Which brings us to the next
question (which I'm sure you'll know the answer to)...>
Should you
pay a
search engine submission company? ---> cont.
