Does the word
“competition” make you cringe? It shouldn’t. The very fact
that you do have competition means that there is a market
for your services, and that is a good thing.
Competition
forces you to strive to do your best. It can even help your
business. When someone goes to one of your competitors and
finds that they can’t deliver what is needed, they will look
elsewhere. If you make yourself visible and available, you
could be the one that gets their business.
One thing you
must do when you are in a business that has lots of
competition is make sure people know about you.
You don’t
necessarily have to spend a ton of money on advertising, but
you do need to make sure that people can easily find you
when they need your services. Join your local chamber of
commerce. Put your number in the Yellow Pages. Run a small
classified ad in the paper where appropriate. And don’t
forget to distribute business cards, fliers, and other
promotional materials.
Providing good
service is very important when it comes to rising above the
competition. Treat every job as if it is your most
important, and listen to your customers’ questions and
suggestions. There are a lot of businesses out there that
lose sight of those simple but vital things. By putting
your customers’ needs first, you will come out ahead of your
competitors who don’t.
Another thing
that can put you a step ahead of the competition is offering
other services that complement your main offerings. You
don’t even have to do the services yourself. You can
outsource them, or simply offer referrals to others who
provide them. For example, if you are a web designer, you
could team up with content writers, graphic designers, and
web programmers to offer complete website solutions. This
approach will allow your customers to come to you and
receive all of the services they need.
Competition
can be intimidating, but it is not such a bad thing. By
maintaining visibility and keeping your customers happy, you
can rise above the competition and get your share of the
market.
