When you are
getting started in business, you may think that any client
is a good one. But that’s not always the case. Some
clients will not be a good match to your services, so it is
important to go after the types of clients you want.
An effective
way to get the kinds of clients you want is to target your
promotional efforts toward them. Let’s say you are a
virtual assistant, for example. Maybe you love to work with
word-at- home parents and have experience in doing so.
Focusing your advertising efforts towards them will help
attract them.
It will also
tell others that you aren’t particularly interested in
working with them and that they should probably look
elsewhere. A nuclear physicist, for instance, probably
isn’t going to look for a virtual assistant who focuses
their efforts on the work-at-home mom. He will look for
someone else with more interest and experience in nuclear
physics.
Your website
should reflect the types of clients you wish to work with.
If you have an online portfolio, fill it with work you have
done for the kinds of clients you desire. Showcasing
certain types of work that you have done will attract people
who want similar services. If you use testimonials, obtain
them from your ideal clients so that similar clients can see
how pleased they could be with your work.
Seek out
networking groups that include clients that you would enjoy
working for. This can work whether you are targeting
specific people or a general type of client. Networking can
be a highly effective method of building relationships, and
using it to your advantage can help you gain the right
clients for you.
Getting one
client that is a perfect fit is often better than having 10
that aren’t. If your clients need services that you don’t
enjoy providing, or don’t feel qualified to do, you would
both be better off if they found a provider that was better
suited for them. Providing quality service to clients that
are right for you will attract more of the same.
