Keeping A Professional Image In Your Home Business

When you have a home-based business, you have to work extra hard to make sure you are taken seriously.  The clients you work with online may never know the difference, but your local clients need to know that you are a pro.  When clients visit your office, you must put forth a professional image. 

If you have a home office, make sure it is well organized and comfortable.  You don’t have to have top-of-the-line office furniture and fine art on the walls, but taking your office seriously will let your clients know that you take them seriously.  And that makes a big difference. 

Instead of having piles of clutter on your desk, invest in a filing system.  It doesn’t have to be elaborate, just a small file cabinet or some stackable file boxes will do.  If your desk doesn’t have drawers for your office supplies, you can find affordable storage at your local discount store. 

You should have at least one or two chairs for your clients to sit in when they visit your office.  If you can’t buy new ones, check the local classifieds for office chairs.  You can often find them at reasonable prices.  Even a stuffed chair or love seat will work, as long as it is in good shape and provides a comfortable place to sit. 

It’s fine to have a couple of pictures of your family, but don’t use your office walls for a family photo album.  Leave the huge photo collages in the living room, and use the walls in your office to display artistic photos or reproductions of paintings by your favorite artist.  It is not necessary to go to great expense.  If photography or art is one of your hobbies, you could even display some of your own work. 

If you don’t have a room at home to dedicate to office space, you could use a virtual office service.  These offer office space you can reserve and use as needed.  They provide the space, furniture, computer, and in some cases a receptionist.  If you meet with clients frequently, some offer monthly plans. 

Don’t let the fact that you run your business from home put you at a disadvantage.  By projecting a professional image through your home office, you can be taken just as seriously as someone with an elaborate, dedicated office.
