Characteristics of a Great Website

Great websites have a few main themes that make them really great.

The execution of these characteristics is what separates the average from the phenomenal sites.

Here are the main characteristics of a great website.

=> Intuitive, Easy to Use Interface & Navigation

Great websites are easy to navigate. Finding your way around a website shouldn't be a difficult chore.

Here are a few principles of creating easy to use interfaces and navigations:

- Less steps. If you can get someone to find the page they're looking for or to sign up for your service with less steps, that's generally better.

- Less options. Believe it or not, people don't like to choose. If you present them with 20 options of what they can do on your website, chances are they will make no choices. On the other hand, give them just one or a handful of choices and they'll choose the one that matches their needs the most.

- Clear navigation. How to get to certain pages should be totally clear. A breadcrumb navigation system makes it easy for people to get back to previous pages and categories.

- Watch your users. Have some friends or family members navigate your website and watch their behaviors. Where do they get stuck? What are tendencies you notice?

Every great website has to have great content.

Great content can be many things. It can be high quality articles that solves a problem for their core user base. It can be an online software that's the best of its kind. It could be a database of music.

Whatever your site specializes in, make sure you're providing the best content. This will keep people coming back to your site as well as have others build backlinks to your website.

=> Visual Appeal & Great Design

Great websites look great. Even if you can't make your website look like an award-winning design, it should at least be visually appealing.

Make good use of white space. Rather than crowding the page, have empty space deliberately placed. This emphasizes the aspects of the page that are there while taking strain off the eyes.

Select a few main colors that represent the "vibe" of the website you want to convey. Black and red might be a great color for a shocking financial website, designed to reveal penny stocks at a discount. Light blue would be a good color choice for a website about raising babies.

Finally, have one or two photos on each page. These photos should be relevant and high quality.

Adding these photos helps change the vibe from just being a lot of text to a visually appealing website.

If you have a website that's easy to use and navigate, has first class content and great design altogether, you'll have a website that'll impress just about any visitor.
