Many business analysts believe that the reason Facebook
overtook MySpace was because Facebook was simply
simpler, with less clutter. While nobody can be sure,
most people would agree that Facebook is just easier to
use than MySpace.
One
principle often taught in design is white space. New
designers often want to add a ton of "cool features" and
"cool looks," while experienced designers understand the
importance of "less is more."
The
same can be said for your site. Keep the navigation simple.
Don't clutter your page with too many colors or too many
elements. Make it easy for you and your visitors.
Often times this can mean just having a simple navigation
bar. Maybe a breadcrumb system throughout the page. Nothing
complicated. Don't worry about "silo SEO structures" or "DHTML
dropdown menus" until you're at the point when it would make
a financial difference.

Low Tech, High Quality Content
Don't use flash. Don't try and program your own social media
site to go with your content website.
Don't do your legal work before you've even built the site.
The same can be said for your taxes. Or your stationary.
People that tell entrepreneurs to file for a DBA/LLC, find
an accountant and design a business card before even making
$1 online simply haven't started a real business.
Keep
it simple on both the tech side and the prep side when
you're getting started. The less time it takes between idea
and launch, the better.
What
matters most is your content. Make sure you have top notch
content and people will love your site, even if it's just
dead simple HTML.

Execute, Execute, Execute
You
can spend a lot of time planning. From researching your
markets and planning websites to brainstorming specific
sections or content ideas, it can really suck up your time
and energy without you realizing it.
Entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of analysis
paralysis, where you're just thinking too much without
putting in enough action.

Execution is key. Launch your first version as soon as
you possibly can. There are two entrepreneurial sayings
that apply here:
1) "If you're not a little embarrassed about Version 1,
you took too long in launching it."
2) "Launch your site as soon as it's even just a tiny
bit better than the competition."
The main message is this: Launch. Execute. Stop waiting,
don't make things complicated, keep things simple and
just build your website.
