Planning Your Website Structure

 

If you talk to experienced marketers, you’ll often find that they have their whole website built in their minds before they actually start to create anything.

They already "build" a working sites in their mind before a single page is created.

Why is this important and how can you plan your website structure? Read on. 

Why Planning Before You Start is Important

There are three reasons to plan your website structure before you start. 

First of all, having your keyword strategy planned out before you start is crucial to having a good SEO strategy. If you try and plan after you’ve built everything, you’re in for a nightmare. 

Second, your navigation structure and user experience. Again, if you just start building stuff without thinking out your navigation structure, you’ll create a website that’s very hard to move through. 

If you don’t think through your customer’s experience clearly, it could end up being very confusing and convoluted for them. 

Finally, you should plan your monetization strategy from start to finish. Although it’s not necessary to monetize from the very beginning, it’s definitely useful to have a plan for how you plan on making money from your site when the time comes. 

Planning Your Structure for Search Engine Rankings 

If you don’t structure your site for SEO from the start, chances are you won’t rank well and won’t get traffic from the search engines. 

First start by researching and finding the main keywords you want to target. Make a list. Then plan out your first few articles and how you’ll incorporate those keywords. 

Planning Your Navigational Structure 

How do you want your site’s navigation structure to work out? 

First of all, it depends on how much content you intend to have. If you’re just creating a 5 page website, then the navigation can be on top, or on the side, it doesn’t really matter. 

If you’re building a blog with the intent of having 50-200 posts however, then it really starts to matter. 

How will people find your older posts? Will you have a “favorites” section? What are your categories so people can sort your posts by something logically? Which navigation sections will be visible from the front page and which will be after they click on a link (like “Categories”?) 

All these questions should be thought out from the beginning. Changing navigation structures later down the road is a real pain – Get it right from the beginning. 

Planning Out Your Monetization Strategy 

You should have a pretty good idea of how you plan to make money from your website before you even start. Do you plan on using AdSense? Affiliate programs? Your own eBook? 

When do you start monetizing? From the beginning, or wait until you have more of a reputation?  

There are many ways to approach this particular question. The key thing is to have your monetization strategy planned out. 

These are the three main things to plan out before you start your website. A few hours spent on planning today could save you weeks of works later.
