Chore Lists and Age Appropriate Chores for Kids
|
|
One of the best ways to teach kids
responsibility is to assign chores. Chore lists and age
appropriate chores for kids can be assigned by first having
a family meeting and then scheduling the chores on a
calendar.
For example, you can utilize a number
of computer software programs to create a template for the
kids. Choose colors and pictures for the template, print out
several copies so that you can place them in their room, on
the refrigerator, or on a peg-board in your home.

Assigning chores will depend on the ages of the kids. First make a
list of chores and then decide which child will be better able to
handle the chore. For example, making the bed; laundry; washing the
dishes; setting the table; taking out the garbage; feeding the
family pet; putting away toys; picking out clothes to wear the next
day; or putting leaves into a compost pile (kids love this
activity).
Once you have the chores listed, then you can add them to each
child’s calendar page and post it in their rooms. Let’s assume the
children will be assigned these chores for a month. To avoid the
kids from becoming bored, you can alternate the chores (age
appropriate) the following month. For the younger children, you may
want to stick to picking up toys and putting them away, choosing
clothes for school, etc.
As the children become older you can assign additional chores such
as raking leaves, mowing the lawn, watering the garden, taking the
family pet for a walk, vacuuming, cleaning out the garage, etc.
Kids love to help mom around the house. It makes them feel good
about themselves in general, and helps them to learn how to be
responsible in particular. It teaches them organizational skills
which will serve them well as they begin school and later on in life
as adults.
Not only is organization good for the children, but good for the
family environment as well. It allows families to spend more quality
time together and less time devoted to cleaning out the clutter.
Chore lists and age appropriate chores for kids are not only good
for their self-esteem, but will offer them the opportunity to become
financially responsible when they seek after-school jobs in the
future.
