Making Healthy Eating Choices For the Family On the Go
|
|
We live in a world of non-stop activity
that includes working parents, kids going to school, and
events and challenges that face us on a daily basis.
One of the things that can be done to
increase over-all health and well-being is by making healthy
eating choices for the family on the go. |
There are days in which the kids may wake up late for school or
perhaps you or your spouse do not have time to sit down and have the
most important meal of the day – breakfast.
Instead of everyone going without breakfast, you can make a carrot
and apple smoothie for the entire family. Put the smoothie into
thermoses and have each family member take it with them as they head
out to either school or work.
While most schools offer lunch programs, some of the meals are not
as healthy as they should be. In those cases, some children opt for
fast food choices instead. Preparing children’s lunch at home
affords you the opportunity to make a healthy lunch along with
fruits that can be eaten as snacks later on in the day.
You can even pack lunches for you and your spouse as well. Healthy
vegetable salads or salads with chicken strips and lemon
vinaigrette, vegetable soups, pasta with zucchini or broccoli; all
of these can be taken to work as an alternative to having lunch at a
restaurant or, in some cases, not eating at all.
As for dinner, there are a myriad of ways in which you can prepare
healthy meals. If you are a working mom and don’t have the time to
prepare dinner when you come home, consider making a month’s worth
of healthy meals on a Saturday. In this way, when you come home all
you need to do is to heat up the meals and prepare a salad as well.
For example, you can freeze marinara sauce; chicken; chicken broth;
meatballs; beans and escarole; and a variety of healthy foods that
you can mix and match each evening.
As we all strive to maintain a healthy diet, no doubt it is hard
when everyone in the family is heading in opposite directions. While
choices for breakfast and lunch may vary, one thing is for certain;
having a nutritious and healthy dinner should be the one time in the
day that, no matter what is going on, a family should take time out
to enjoy together.
