Setting Time Boundaries for Your Home Business

If you are a work-at-home mom, you can
certainly attest to the fact that time is critical in
coordinating your business and family life.
Setting time boundaries for your home
business allows you to organize your schedule so that
neither your business nor family suffers from lack of
attention

Working at home can have its benefits as well
as its drawbacks. Whether you have a family with small children to
take care of or elderly parents, it takes planning and organization
from the outset to ensure all boundaries are set to ensure an
efficient and successful home business is achieved.
To begin with, it is necessary to clearly define the operational
hours of your business. Taking into consideration the age of the
children, the hours may have to be tweaked if your children attend
pre-k or elementary school which requires you to take them and pick
them up each day.
Using this scenario, your hours of operation may be from 9 to 2,
depending of course on your children’s schedule. Conversely, if you
have grown children or caring for elderly parents you may choose to
run your home business a full 8 hours a day.
Setting aside time for lunch breaks and/or getting out of the house
for at least an hour is important not only for your health, but it
helps to clear the mind and offer a change of scenery. Sitting in
front of the computer all day is not conducive to a good work ethic.
As a home business owner, you need to have a room in which you can
work without the constant interruptions. Therefore, place a “do not
disturb” sign on the door so that family members know not to
interrupt your daily business affairs.
If you have any pets at home, keep them in another room in your
home. Avoid answering the phone by utilizing an answering machine,
and do not answer the door if someone comes to call. This is
predicated on the fact that you have already advised your friends
and family that you will not be available during the business’ hours
of operation.
One of the problems we all face as home business owners is that we
take on too much in the beginning and become overwhelmed. Learn to
say no even though it may go against your work ethic. Eventually,
you will be able to outsource work which will open up personal time,
but at the outset the business needs your full and undivided
attention.
Setting time boundaries for the business is one important aspect,
but setting time boundaries for yourself is just as necessary. If
you become overworked, you will not be able to manage the day-to-day
problems that inevitably occur within your family circle.
