Word of mouth marketing is a cost-effective and a faster way of increasing your business and market share. Obviously, you are looking with positivity at this marketing tool called the word of mouth marketing. Just like any dimension or pursuit, word of mouth marketing has some basic sets of dos and don’ts. It’s a general observation that people talk about their bad experience more rather than a good one. We cannot control what you customer is talking but we can at least discourage them from talking bad, if they are not willing to talk favorably about you. You need to follow some don’ts in your business dealings so that you are not badmouthed.

Things to avoid in word of mouth marketing:

Word of mouth marketing, being people power has immense potential to influence a buying decision. However, the word of mouth cannot influence a buying decision each time. It can encourage or discourage a person’s buying decision for your offerings at the most for the first two times. But, after the first time, further purchases will be based on the person’s own experience with your products and services. Therefore, word of mouth marketing is not a long term and sustainable marketing tool to boost your company’s sales. Don’t rely heavily on it.

Moreover, word of mouth marketing, though, initially quite influential and cost-effective has limited reach. Other advertising methods where media plays the key role have quite prolific reach and leave a deep impact. Therefore, spend the needed money on advertising. Don’t be complacent with just word of mouth marketing.

Message boards, blogs, epinions are good ways to spread the word of mouth about your products and services but they also keep you on your toes. As mentioned above, people talk more about bad experiences than the good ones and that is what they are expected to do on these online interaction platforms. To make things worse, the reach of Internet, as we all know, is tremendous. You can very well understand the implication of participating in these online discussion boards. Be very cautious when using these and make sure that you do all possible to maintain a positive image of yourself and your business.

Word of mouth marketing catalyzes your reputation and credibility in the market. The potential of word of mouth is immense and therefore you, as a business need to be extra careful to avoid any event that may trigger any negative reaction from your customer. Following the rule precaution is better than cure, serve your customers honestly and enjoy their applause for you.
